When Is Altcoin Season? The Signals Checklist for 2026
When is altcoin season? Instead of guessing a date, use this checklist: Bitcoin dominance, ETH/BTC, breadth and dollar liquidity. Has alt season started?
· 8 min read
"When is altcoin season?" is one of the most searched questions in crypto, and one of the most badly answered. Many videos and posts give a date or a month. Nobody can reliably predict that. What you can do is check whether the conditions that have historically come before and during alt seasons are in place right now. This article gives you that checklist, explains each signal, and shows how to answer "has altcoin season started?" for yourself using live data.
If you are new to the term, start with what is altcoin season.
Key takeaways
- There is no reliable calendar date for alt season. Treat any exact prediction with suspicion.
- Alt season needs capital to rotate out of Bitcoin into altcoins without leaving crypto. That shows up as falling Bitcoin dominance while BTC's price holds.
- A rising ETH/BTC ratio has often been the first sign of rotation.
- Broad participation (breadth) and easy dollar liquidity make the move sustainable.
- The altcoin season index (75+) confirms alt season after the fact; it is not an early warning.
When is altcoin season? Why a date is the wrong question
Alt seasons are driven by money flows and risk appetite, not by the calendar. Past cycles have seen broad altcoin rallies late in bull markets, such as the 2017–18 and 2021 runs, but the gaps between Bitcoin's move and the altcoin move varied, and some expected alt seasons were weak or narrow.
So a better question is: what would need to be true for alt season to start, and is it true today? That turns a guessing game into a set of things you can check.
The altcoin season checklist
DanioX reads five signals. None of them works alone. What matters is how many agree.
| # | Signal | What to look for | Where to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bitcoin dominance (BTC.D) | Falling, while BTC price holds or rises | /bitcoin-dominance |
| 2 | ETH/BTC | Rising and holding above recent lows | /eth-btc |
| 3 | Breadth | A growing share of coins in daily uptrends | /signals |
| 4 | Liquidity & the dollar | DXY weak or falling, yields easing, VIX calm | /dollar-index-crypto |
| 5 | Altcoin season index | Rising toward, then above, 75 | /altcoin-season-index |
Signals 1 to 4 tend to move first. Signal 5 confirms.
1. Bitcoin dominance falling while BTC holds
Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's share of the total crypto market cap. It is the single most useful gauge for this question, but it has to be read with Bitcoin's price:
- BTC.D down, BTC price up or flat: money is flowing into altcoins. This is the alt-season pattern.
- BTC.D down, BTC price falling hard: everything is falling, altcoins just slightly less for now. This is not alt season, and altcoins often catch up on the downside later.
- BTC.D up, BTC price up: Bitcoin season. Altcoins lag.
- BTC.D up, BTC price down: risk-off. Altcoins usually fall hardest.
We explain these four states in detail in bitcoin dominance explained.
2. ETH/BTC turning up
Ethereum is the largest altcoin and usually the first to benefit when traders rotate out of Bitcoin. When the ETH/BTC ratio stops making lower lows and starts trending up, it has often acted as the trigger for the wider altcoin market. We treat it as the rotation signal: if ETH cannot outperform BTC, a broad alt season is unlikely.
A short spike in ETH/BTC on news is not enough. Look for a trend: higher highs and higher lows on the daily or weekly chart.
3. Breadth: are most coins trending?
Breadth answers "how many coins are actually in uptrends?" A useful version is the share of liquid coins trading above their own daily trend (for example, a rising moving average). Our signals engine uses breadth as a regime switch: when fewer than roughly four in ten liquid coins are in daily uptrends, conditions are treated as too narrow for altcoin trades, whatever the headlines say.
Breadth matters because alt season is, by definition, broad. If breadth is low, any altcoin rally is limited to a few names.
4. Liquidity and the US dollar
Altcoins sit at the far, risky end of the market. They tend to do best when money is cheap and the dollar is soft. The gauges we watch:
- DXY (US dollar index): falling or rejecting its highs is supportive; rising and breaking highs is a headwind.
- US 10-year yield: falling is supportive; rising fast is a headwind.
- VIX: calm and falling is supportive; spiking above about 20 signals stress.
- Fed policy and inflation data: cooling inflation and cuts or pauses help; hot data and hikes hurt.
Our dollar index crypto page tracks these, and gold vs bitcoin explains how they fit into the broader macro chain.
5. The altcoin season index confirms
Finally, the altcoin season index counts how many of the top 50 coins (excluding stablecoins and asset-backed tokens) have beaten Bitcoin over 90 days. A reading of 75 or more is the usual alt-season threshold.
Because it looks back 90 days, it moves late. By the time it is above 75, the early part of the rotation is behind you. It is best used to confirm what signals 1 to 4 already suggested, and to spot when the rotation is fading (the index rolling over from high levels).
Has altcoin season started? How to check in two minutes
Here is a simple routine you can run on any day:
- Open /bitcoin-dominance. Is BTC.D trending down over the last few weeks? Is Bitcoin's price holding at the same time?
- Open /eth-btc. Is the ratio making higher highs and higher lows?
- Open /signals. Is the breadth regime on or off?
- Open /dollar-index-crypto. Is the dollar falling or rising?
- Open /altcoin-season-index. Where is the reading, and which way is it moving?
Then score it:
| Signals agreeing | Reading |
|---|---|
| 0–1 | Bitcoin season or risk-off. Alt season has not started. |
| 2–3 | Transition. Rotation may be building; stay selective. |
| 4–5 | Alt-season conditions. Index likely at or near 75. |
This is not a trading system on its own, but it keeps you from acting on social-media noise.
Is alt season coming? Early signs vs. false starts
Before a real rotation, it is common to see several false starts. Some patterns that have tended to fail:
- ETH/BTC bounces, but BTC.D keeps rising. Ethereum gets a relief rally but capital is still concentrating in Bitcoin.
- Altcoins jump while Bitcoin drops sharply. Dominance falls, but for the wrong reason. These moves often reverse.
- One sector rallies. A narrative (say, AI tokens or meme coins) runs hard while breadth stays low.
- Rising dollar and yields. Even with good crypto-specific news, tightening liquidity has tended to cap risk assets.
Early signs that have been more reliable are the combination of a steady ETH/BTC uptrend, dominance rolling over while Bitcoin is stable near its highs, and breadth expanding week after week.
Altcoin season 2026: what to watch
We will not guess a month for altcoin season 2026, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What we can say is which conditions would need to line up, and all of them are visible on the live pages:
- A Bitcoin trend that is holding rather than breaking down.
- Dominance starting to trend lower from that position.
- ETH/BTC moving from a downtrend into an uptrend.
- Breadth rising above the regime threshold and staying there.
- A softer dollar and calmer rates backdrop.
Also consider structural changes. Spot Bitcoin ETFs and growing institutional ownership have given Bitcoin a deeper, steadier source of demand than in earlier cycles, and the number of altcoins has grown enormously. Both could make future alt seasons more selective than the broad rallies of the past. That is one reason we weight breadth so heavily: it tells you whether a rally is truly broad or just concentrated in a few names.

How to act when the checklist turns green
Signals tell you the environment, not the trade. When conditions lean toward alt season, a disciplined approach still matters:
- Start with the leaders. Rotation has historically run from ETH to large caps before small caps.
- Buy pullbacks, not breakouts. Chasing vertical candles tends to leave you buying the top of a move.
- Define the stop first. Know where the idea is wrong before you enter.
- Take profits in stages. Alt seasons have historically ended fast.

FAQ
When will altcoin season start?
No one can give a reliable date. Alt season has historically started when Bitcoin dominance falls while Bitcoin's price holds, ETH/BTC turns up, breadth widens and the dollar weakens. Check those signals on the live pages instead of relying on predictions.
Has altcoin season started?
Check the altcoin season index: a reading of 75 or more means at least three quarters of the top 50 coins beat Bitcoin over 90 days. For an earlier read, look at dominance and ETH/BTC, which tend to move first.
Is alt season coming?
It is coming when the leading signals line up: falling BTC.D with a stable BTC price, a rising ETH/BTC trend, expanding breadth and easing liquidity. If most of those are pointing the other way, alt season is not close.
Is it altcoin season right now?
We cannot answer that in a static article. The live reading and our current season label are on the signals and altcoin season index pages.
Will there be an altcoin season in 2026?
Possibly, but it depends on conditions, not the calendar. Structural changes like spot Bitcoin ETFs and the huge number of new tokens could make any 2026 alt season more selective than past ones.
What usually ends an altcoin season?
Historically: Bitcoin dominance turning back up, ETH/BTC rolling over, a tightening in dollar liquidity, and heavy leverage in small caps unwinding. The index falling back from high levels is the late confirmation.
