The rules, exactly as tested
Binance spot daily candles (UTC), closed candles only. Altcoins only (BTC and stablecoins are left out), long only, one trade per coin at a time. These are the rules of one member of the trend ensemble in Zarattini, Pagani & Barbon (2025), "Catching Crypto Trends".
- Breakout. The daily close is higher than the highest close of the previous 20 days. Entry = that close.
- Stop. The midpoint of the highest and lowest close of the last 20 days, the breakout day included.
- Trailing. After every later daily close the stop becomes the new midpoint if that is higher; it never moves down.
- Exit. The first daily close below the stop that was in force before that close. Exit = that close. There is no take-profit and no time stop; intraday wicks below the stop do not count.
- Milestones. +2R, +5R, +10R above the entry (R = entry − starting stop) are shown on the signal card to say how far a trade has run. They are not exits.
- Costs. 0.1% Binance spot taker fee on each side and 0.02% slippage on the entry and on the exit (both market orders at the daily close).
In the backtest 40% of the trades reached +2R (typically after 2-9d), 19% reached +5R (6-17d) and 8% reached +10R (9-24d); 66% ended at a loss (after 4-11d). Live signals carry these odds next to their milestones.
How the setup was found and tested
DanioX's earlier setups (CTP, FGA, AA, AMD, AMD Structural, Spot Swing, all retired since) were about break-even or negative after fees over 2023-2026, so in October 2026 we tested published and classic systems on Binance daily candles from January 2019: this trend breakout and its short mirror, Connors' RSI(2) mean reversion (long and short) and a capitulation bounce. The rules and the pass test were written down before the first run. Only the long trend breakout passed; the short mirror, RSI(2) and the bounce were break-even or lost money. The same code runs the backtest and the live scanner (trend.py, with unit tests), and six random 2026 backtest trades replayed through the live scanner gave the same entry and stop. The full backtest had up to 64 trades open at once in strong markets, which no account could follow, so the money calculator replays only the trades the live caps would have allowed.
What the result means
Trend following does well when altcoins trend and gives back money in choppy or falling markets: 2019 +0.61R, 2020 +2.02R, 2021 +2.09R, 2022 -0.46R, 2023 +1.37R, 2024 +1.31R, 2025 +0.15R, 2026 +0.57R per trade. In 2022, a falling year, it lost; it also lost money in long stretches such as January to June 2026 before the summer trend paid for them. Because it only buys strength and exits on the trailing stop, it sits mostly in cash in a bear market instead of holding losers. Compare every setup on ; is the same breakout with two skip rules on the top 100 coins.
