A third of the world's 100 biggest companies listed in New York are foreign (TSMC, ASML, Toyota, Novo Nordisk, Shell and others), and their home markets move them first. The S&P 500, Dow Jones, Nasdaq Composite, Nasdaq 100, Russell 2000 and the VIX for the US; the S&P/TSX and Bovespa for the Americas; the FTSE 100, DAX, CAC 40 and Euro Stoxx 50 for Europe; and the Nikkei 225, Hang Seng, Shanghai Composite, Sensex, KOSPI and S&P/ASX 200 for Asia-Pacific.
They are the last daily closes, refreshed once a day; each market closes at a different time, so Asian indices show a later session than New York's on the same morning. Changes are in each index's own currency.
The VIX measures the volatility that S&P 500 options price in for the next 30 days. Under 15 is calm, over 30 is fear; it usually jumps when stocks fall.
